“According To Its Kind”

Generally speaking, there are two diametrically opposed and mutually exclusive views as to the origin of this world and everything in it.  The prevailing view, the view of materialistic science, is that it just happened, and over the course of millions of years “evolved” into the world of today.  The other view, the view of the Bible and conservative Christianity, is that, no, it didn’t.  It was created.  In six days.  A third view, which says it is Christian, tries to marry the two, as it were.  This mongrel view says that, yes, God created things to start with, but then He used evolution to develop His work.

As always, our question must be, What does the Scripture say? Romans 4:3.

Genesis 1:11, 12, Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth; and it was so.  And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind.

Genesis 1:21, So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind.”

Genesis 1:24, 25, Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind.  And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind.

In these five verses, there are ten (10) references to vegetation, birds, fish, insects and animals reproducing after its or their kind.  From the very beginning, God said that there would be no “development” into other “kinds,” but that everything that could reproduce would do so to reproduce itself, not something new.  This does not mean that, within a particular “kind,” there could not be a sort of development, hence, for example, all the different kinds of dogs, from large guard dogs (LGD) that weigh 200 pounds to the tiny chihuahua, which weighs 5 pounds or so.  But they are all dogs, and they reproduce dogs, not cats or canaries.

  1. I heard a man once say he had to believe in the mongrel view because that’s the only thing that made sense to him. I wanted to ask him if he had a god that was only as smart as he was. Didn’t seem much of a god to me, because I just didn’t think the guy was nearly as smart as he thought he was. Whether or not we understand the “how” of creation, the fact of creation is absolutely clear according to Scripture. Six days. God breathed. And there you have it: a purposeful, intelligent, orderly creation. Thank you for your thoughtful post. I pray that, especially those of us who claim Christ as our Savior, will base our beliefs on what Scripture says. God bless you for your faithfulness to His Word, my friend.

    • That’s the trouble with us; we all tend to think we’re as smart as God is – not realizing the infinity that is between us, or the grace it took from both Father and Son to bridge that gap.
